Amazon.com swallows two competing social networks for readers

Some interesting developments in Social Networks being gobbled up. In this case, a couple of Amazon.com acquisitions means it now owns two competing networks:

Amazon.com Monday agreed to acquire Shelfari, a social network for book lovers, for an undisclosed sum. Amazon’s acquisition of Shelfari means the site will likely make it a much stronger competitor to other social networks that focus on bibliophiles, according to some observers. In addition, Amazon earlier this month acquired online rare book seller AbeBooks, and gained its 40% stake in one of Shelfari’s main competitors, LibraryThing. Thus, observers note, Amazon will have a stake in two competing social networks for readers.

Amazon’s buy-vs-build strategy to build up its strength in social networking is likely the start of a trend. Social networking sites who have been able to find the right formula and build their base will be attractive properties for allied e-commerce sites.

Ning and the cost of free social networking platforms
Like this post? Go ahead, pass it on:

I’m a big fan of Ning: it’s a quick and easy social networking platform to get a social network up and running, especially for non-profits. Their features are often stronger than similar social network software.

But I get nervous at the idea of my site relying on a single company. In a perfect world, it means someone else worries about the servers, infrastructure, etc.

In the real world, it means you are at its mercy, both in terms of technology and politics.

So I was interested to hear the news from TechCrunch that Ning has removed all widgets created by popular premium developer WidgetLaboratory.

The news has come without warning and is being met with outrage by a number of users who have spent hundreds of dollars on the widgets to build up their social networks. WidgetLaboratory sells its widgets for around $30 a month, and has managed to become the most popular widget creator on Ning’s platform.

Now I have no doubts that this wasn’t a bolt out of the blue, and that Ning didn’t just decide to give WidgetLaboratory the boot for the fun of it, but for any of the Ning customers who relied on the widgets, it’s a reminder that nothing is free…

WordPress for Social Networking?

If I was a developer of social networking software, I’d be a little nervous right now.

BuddyPress is essentially a set of WordPress MU-specific plugins that switch WordPress MU (Multi-user) from a blogging platform to a social platform, with features like:

  • Extended Profiles
  • Personal Blog
  • Private Messaging
  • Friends
  • Groups
  • The Wire
  • Status Updates
  • Albums

It’s pre-Beta right now, but given how easy and powerful WordPress is (for blogs like this one) and how huge the developer network is, this is one to watch. I’ll be installing it soon to play around, and will post reports…

Not the way to launch new Social Networking Software

The page says…

“Orbit is a popular social networking software that makes uploading videos, finding and making friends and communicating with other internet users very simple. You can share your favorite videos, audios, and pictures with your social networking groups.”

So I click through to the demo, and this is my reward:

Not a good way to convince me to buy your software.

There is a ton of social networking software and platforms our there, but as was the case with dating site software (many of which have been re-purposed) , there are a handful of dubious ones for every one solid platform. I’ll be publishing a run-down of the top social networking software and platforms to consider soon (just waiting for the newest versions of Elgg and SocialEngine to come out of beta…)
