More parents are turning to social networking sites for advice and support, especially new mothers. According to a new report released in April 2009 by The Nielsen Company, “Becoming a mother is a dramatic inflection point and drives women to the Web in search of advice and a desire to connect with others in their shoes.”

Hi, any advice about when is the right time to add a social network to a website. if you have a blog or website should you wait until you have loads of hits or subscribers to a newsletter before launching something like a ning subdomain in order to have a chance of populating it and make it look reasonably busy from an earlier stage

    Or should you just go for it early on and accept it will look empty for quite a while as it builds? or will this put people off.

    Starting a social network from a standing start is tough, and by the time member #2 joins, member #1 may have given up hope.

    I recommend building a launch list first (like I’ve done to the right to promote my book) so when you do launch, interactions can start right away. Let them know a community is coming, and invite them to secure an invitation, as with this site:
